How Your Gut Health is Tied to Your Immune System.

Is your immune system off? Did you know that your gut health is tied to your immune system? So basically, if you’re looking to boost your immunity, you have to do a little gut check. Your gut wall houses roughly 70- 80 percent of the cells that make up your immune system. Chances are if that is not in check, you’ll be getting sick a bit more often.

So, if you want to start boosting your immunity and improve your health, start by fixing your gut. Your gut literally affects your entire body.

Your gut is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of the foods we eat. So yes, while we may be exposed to germs and nasty flu bugs on the daily, it all comes down to the integrity of our body’s defense mechanisms, or immune system. When our immune system is working properly, we don’t even notice it. We can fight off the germs and infections like a champ. But when we have an immune system that is not working 100%, we are at a greater risk of developing infections and other health conditions.

When your immune system is compromised, you’ll notice that you are getting sick more often and you have trouble fighting off even the common cold.

Our gut houses bacteria. When fed correctly, it does a great job of keeping us healthy and having a strong immune system. Feed your gut wrong, like junk food, processed foods, tons of sugar and oh yes, antibiotics, and it won’t quite be doing the job it is supposed to do in keeping us healthy.

If you find yourself constantly getting over a cold only to have another one in a few weeks you may want to check this out further. You may seriously need a gut check.

What can cause your gut to be out of balance?

There are many things that knock our digestive system off balance. Here are just a few of MANY things that can cause a bad gut and lead to a poor immune system.

  1. A junk diet. This nutrient-poor diet makes all the wrong bacteria and yeast grow in the gut, leading to a damaged ecosystem.
  2. Medication overuse. Anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, acid-blocking drugs and steroids damage the gut or block normal digestive function.
  3. Inadequate digestive enzymes. Stress, acid-blocking medications, and zinc deficiencies can all contribute to lack of adequate digestive enzyme function.
  4. Stress. Chronic stress alters your gut nervous system, creating a leaky gut and changing the normal bacteria in the gut.

How do you fix your gut and boost your immune system?
