How To Use Essential Oils For Relaxation
Regardless of your lifestyle, family size, employment status it seems that in today’s world the majority of us are stressed and moving from one task to the other as quickly as possible. We feel like there is so much to be done but so little time.
Being in this constant state of go, go, go puts the body and brain in overdrive. This makes it very hard to shut off your brain at the end of the day when you want to unwind and relax. I remember a time when I thought having a bath would be relaxing but then thought, “I just don’t have time to do that”. Clearly this is an unhealthy mindset as self-care is so important. However with the hustle and bustle of daily life, many of us struggle to remember to put ourselves first.
I Needed to Make a Change
When I was introduced to essential oils several years ago, I was quite skeptical thinking, “why would people waste money on these oils?!?” However as I began to use essential oils for respiratory support, relaxation, uplifting mood, relieving occasional/minor pain and as a digestive aid it was clear to me that essential oils really did help my body. Now I am an avid essential oil user and they are a large part of my daily routine. One of the main ways I use essential oils is to help me relax, unwind, and clear my head at the end of a hectic day.
Common Essential Oils for Relaxation
The wonderful thing about essential oils is that they are so versatile meaning that one essential oil can be used for many things and also that many essential oils can be used for one thing such as relaxation. Here are some essential oils which are commonly used for relaxation:
Lavender
Lavender essential oil is one of the most popular essential oils for relaxation. It is also a very common essential oil in general, and is one that almost all essential oil users have in their supply.
Cedarwood
When I first learned of and tried cedarwood essential oil I was surprised to learn that it helps with relaxation. However I was quite pleased after trying this oil in my diffuser one evening as the woodsy aroma really did help me to feel calm and relaxed.
Bergamot
Bergamot essential oil is a citrus oil which is great in helping to support your mood including relaxation as well as uplifting your spirits. This is likely not an essential oil that you want to use to help you unwind at the end of a long day but rather one you can use during a hectic day when you’re feeling overwhelmed and frustrated.
Safety precaution: It is important to note that bergamot is a photosensitive essential oil meaning that if it is applied to your skin and then exposed to direct sunlight within 12 to 24 hours it could react with the sunlight and burn your skin. I recommend using this essential oil in your diffuser or apply it to an area such as the soles of your feet which are protected by socks or shoes when going outside (greatly reducing the risk of a reaction).
Eucalyptus
Many people have encountered eucalyptus related to relaxation in spas. The same of course, is true for eucalyptus essential oil. Not only does it promote feelings of relaxation, eucalyptus essential oil also helps in promoting feelings of clear breathing which can be very helpful when you’re feeling overwhelmed and agitated.
Frankincense
Frankincense has been used for many years and is in the Bible (you may remember it being talked about in reference to the Three Wise Men). Frankincense has been called the King of oils and it is often said that if you aren’t sure which essential oil to use, use frankincense. Frankincense can be used for many different things and of course, relaxation is one of them.
How to Use Essential Oils for Relaxation
There are many different ways that you can use essential oils for relaxation
Now you know which essential oils can help you with relaxation, but how do you use them?
One way you can use essential oils for relaxation is to apply the oil topically. You can apply 1-2 drops of the essential oil of your choice to the soles of your feet or to the back of your neck. You could also use a few different essential oils and make a roller bottle blend which is perfect for relaxation.
Many people enjoy using an essential oil diffuser for relaxation. You can add 3 to 4 drops of the essential oil of your choice to your diffuser or you can make a diffuser blend with multiple essential oils.
I hope this post has given you some ideas on ways to use essential oils for relaxation. However more than that, I hope you are able to use one of these oils and take some well deserved time to relax!
