3 Tips to Stop Stress Eating
Let me tell you… I’ve been stressed out lately and in the past, I turn to food. I’d eat when I was stressed. I’d eat when I was anxious. Now, I know that’s not the best way to handle my emotions, so what do I do?
I went the grocery store last night and I really wanted to eat a chocolate brownie or a apple fritter doughnut. So what stopped me?
First of all, all this drama plays out in that 6-inches between our ears (that’s in our mind). So, if the slightest hint of bad news sends you into a chocolate cupcake consumption frenzy, then keep reading for 3 Tips to Stop Stress Eating.
TIP #1: THE ONLY PERSON WHO DECIDES WHAT SOMETHING MEANS IS YOU!
The only person who decides what something means is YOU. Why is this important? Because stress is intangible, which means that although stress may have an instant physiological response, you create the rest of the drama in your head. And if you can create it then you can break up with it. Bust out some meditation, deep breathing or take a two minute time out. Do SOMETHING that puts some distance between the stress and you besides the apple fritter doughnut. Remember, you hold all the power which leads me to my second tip…..
TIP #2: YOU CAN’T CONTROL YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES, BUT YOU CAN CONTROL HOW YOU RESPOND.
You can’t control your circumstances, but you CAN control how you respond. When you feel like the giant octopus arms of life are slinging mud your way, you only need to ask yourself, “What is my next RIGHT move?” You don’t have to have it all sorted out to make progress. You only need to focus on who you want to be rather than who you fear you have already become.
TIP #3: SET YOUR MIND FOR SUCCESS FIRST THINK IN THE MORNING!
The DECISIONS of your life are more important than the CONDITIONS of your life. Don’t allow your mind to wander off into the set of Days of Our Lives drama. Instead, harness it in early in the morning! Make lists of stats to be conquered that day, write your affirmations, list words of gratitude, write 2-3 things your looking forward to that day…. And then, revisit it when you feel that stress start to creep back into your life.
